Q.1 |
What is Myopia and Hypermetropia? |
| Ans. |
When the curvature of the cornea- the front transparent surface of the eye, is steep (myopia) or flat (hypermetropia), it leads to an inability of the eye to focus the visual image accurately. This leads to decreased quality of vision, especially of distant objects, fine print etc. A steep curvature (myopia) is corrected with minus glasses and a flat curvature (hypermetropia) is corrected with plus glasses.
After the age of 40 years, the eye muscles, which accommodate for reading (near work), begin to lose their elasticity. This leads to an inability to read clearly and difficulty in near work. This is called Presbyopia and is managed by giving plus glasses for reading.

Q.2 |
What is Cylindrical Power? |
| Ans. |
Sometimes the curvature of the Eye (cornea) may not be uniform. It may be steep or flat in a particular direction. In such a case the minus or the plus glass will have to be given only in that particular direction. Such a glass/ lens is called a cylinder and the direction in which its power lies is described as its axis, mentioned in degrees. |

Q.3 |
What are Contact Lenses ? |
| Ans. |
Contact Lenses are made of a special material which is inert (does not cause reaction). They are specifically powered for the number of the eye (like spectacles) and they are worn directly on the cornea (front transparent surface) of the eye. They are not visible to onlookers like spectacles are, and at the same time they provide better quality and field of vision. There are different types of lenses available and the choice depends on one’s specific number, comfort and lifestyle. |

| Q.4 |
What is LASIK (Laser Vision Correction) ? |
| Ans. |
It is a process by which the Cornea (front transparent surface) of the eye can be reshaped by removing micro thin layers of tissue with the help of a special type of Laser. By this process, one can get rid of their spectacle number permanently. It is a painless and safe procedure and takes about 5 minutes for each eye. (See detailed page on Laser Vision Correction) |

| Q.5 |
What is Computer Vision Syndrome? |
| Ans. |
This is a modern day disease due to excess computer use. It occurs as a result of weakening of eye muscles, poor tear circulation and decreased oxygen supply to the eyes due to constant staring at the computer screen. It results in headaches, redness, dryness of eyes, difficulty in reading, blurring of distant vision and a host of other eye and postural problems. Eye care counseling and Ergonomical/ Work place modifications are the only modes of treatment. |

| Q.6 |
What is Cataract and Phaco Cataract Surgery? |
| Ans. |
When the lens inside the eye becomes opaque or cloudy, it is called cataract. In Phaco cataract surgery, the lens is broken down and removed from the eye with the help of ultrasonic power from a small titanic probe. A very small cut is required to do this, therefore a faster postoperative recovery and visual regainment can be achieved. |

| Q.7 |
What is Glaucoma? |
| Ans. |
When the pressure of the fluid inside the eyeball increases, it begins to compress the Optic Nerve of the Eye (which carries visual signals from the eye to the brain). Due to this, the vision deteriorates starting first with peripheral vision loss and eventually followed by complete visual loss. If diagnosed early, it can be controlled and visual loss prevented. |

| Q.8 |
How does high Blood pressure and Diabetes affect the Eye? |
| Ans. |
Blood pressure problem and Diabetes affects the blood vessels of the Retina (the back curtain of the eye). This can lead to bleeding, damage of retina, fluid leaking into the retinal layers and Detachment of the retina. Therefore it is very important for such people to have at least an annual Eye check up. |
